INTERNATIONAL ORANGUTAN DAY | criticallyendangered

Between the world’s worryingly warm summer and the war on plastic, the need to take care of the earth and everything in it has never been more apparent. With countless creatures on the brink of extinction, we should be prioritising critically endangered animals in our efforts to protect our planet.

Finding itself on the list of the earth’s critically endangered species is the beloved orangutan, and World Orangutan Day provides the perfect opportunity to show them some love. Celebrated annually on 19th August, World Orangutan Day sets out to celebrate the existence of orangutans and raise awareness of their plight.

With their cartoon cuteness, orangutans are precious tree-top dwellers which can currently only be found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, and even here their numbers are dwindling. For example, it’s thought that Borneo’s orangutan population has decreased by 55% over the past twenty years.

We’ve been helping these adorable creatures for over a year and a half with our gorgeous orange Orangutan socks, funding some of the amazing work that Friends of the National Parks Foundation does to help protect the habitat of Orangutans in Borneo.

Orangutans have a special place in our hearts at Critically Endangered Socks, and a special embroidered place on our socks themselves, so we’re not content with only helping adult orangutans. We want to focus on their adorable offspring too, so we’ve included orangutans in our latest project – critically endangered baby socks.

We’ve recently launched our baby socks project on Indiegogo, a crowdfunding website, with the aim of getting our adorable socks (which double up as hand-puppets) into production by September.

Once these socks are made and sold, 10% of all profits will go to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), which does amazing work protecting the Bornean rainforest to ensure that baby orangutans have a safe rainforest to grow up in.

Just like our adult socks, our customers can choose which animal they would like to help most by selecting the design of sock dedicated to that animal. Therefore, some of the profits from the orangutan baby socks will help baby orangutans; the sale of just one pair of orangutan baby socks will buy a tree seedling to help restore the heavily-logged Borneo rainforest.

So, if you’d like to do your bit to help little orangutans, hopefully you’ll soon be able to buy orangutan socks for the little humans in your life. However, the best way you can support our orangutan-saving efforts is by supporting our Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. For as little as £13, you can back our project and be part of something wonderful.

What better way to celebrate World Orangutan Day than by ensuring the future of baby orangutans (and the future of our baby socks?).
